How to Get Grease Out of Jeans

The short answer

Grease stains on denim are trickier than on most fabrics because denim's tight weave traps oil deep in the fiber structure. Dish soap is the first treatment — but denim requires a longer dwell time (10–15 minutes) than lighter-weight fabrics. Work the dish soap in gently; do not scrub, which can fade the dye or distort the weave. Check the stain carefully in good light before putting the jeans in the dryer — heat permanently sets grease into denim.

Before you start

You need: liquid dish soap, clean cloths or paper towels.

Check the care label. Most jeans are machine washable in cold or warm water. Raw or unwashed denim may have specific handling instructions.

For dried grease that has already been through a wash cycle: apply dish soap and let it soak for 15–30 minutes. Heat-set grease is significantly harder to remove and may not come out fully.

Steps

  1. 1Blot fresh grease with a paper towel or clean cloth. Press firmly and lift straight up — do not rub, which spreads oil across the denim weave.
  2. 2Apply liquid dish soap directly to the stain, covering it completely.
  3. 3Work the dish soap in gently with a fingertip from the outside edges inward, using small circular motions.
  4. 4Let the dish soap sit for 10–15 minutes. Denim's dense weave requires more dwell time than lighter fabrics.
  5. 5Rinse with cool water, then machine wash according to the care label.
  6. 6Before putting the jeans in the dryer, check the stained area while still damp, in good light. If any trace of grease remains, repeat from step 2.

What not to do

  • Do not put the jeans in the dryer until you are certain the stain is gone — heat permanently sets grease in denim.
  • Do not scrub aggressively — it can fade the dye and distort the denim weave around the stain.
  • Do not rely on a wash cycle alone without dish soap pre-treatment — laundry detergent does not cut grease effectively in denim without a surfactant pre-soak.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove dried grease from jeans that have already been washed and dried?

Heat-set grease stains are harder to remove but not always permanent. Apply dish soap directly to the dry stain and let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then wash cold. Results vary depending on how much heat the jeans received and how many times they have been washed. Repeat treatments sometimes make additional progress.

Will dish soap fade my jeans?

Dish soap on its own is unlikely to fade jeans if rinsed out promptly. The main risks are scrubbing (which can rub away surface dye from dark-wash denim) or leaving product on the fabric too long before rinsing. Work gently and rinse thoroughly after the dwell time.
